One shift at a time, in 24-hour clock. Overnight shifts work — an end time earlier than the start rolls to the next day.
Decimal hours are the point
A shift from 09:00 to 17:30 with a half-hour break is eight hours exactly, and payroll wants that as 8.00. The mistake that costs people money is writing hours and minutes into a decimal field: a shift of 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75, not 7.45. Across a fortnight that error is a real amount of money in someone's pocket — usually not yours.
Overnight shifts are handled by rolling past midnight, so 22:00 to 06:00 reads as eight hours rather than a negative number.
The overtime split uses a simple daily threshold with time-and-a-half beyond it, which is the most common arrangement. Real overtime rules vary enormously — some places calculate weekly rather than daily, some have double-time tiers, and many salaried roles are exempt entirely. Treat the pay figure as a check against your payslip rather than an authority, and take any genuine discrepancy to your employer with the underlying times.
Questions
Does it handle overnight shifts?
Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start, it rolls over midnight — 22:00 to 06:00 counts as eight hours.
Why does my payslip differ?
Rounding rules are the usual cause — many employers round clock times to the nearest quarter hour. Overtime may also be calculated weekly rather than daily, which this does not model.
How do I total a whole week?
Run each shift and add the decimal hours. Weekly overtime thresholds need that weekly total rather than the per-shift split shown here.
