The stack, not the headline
Etsy's structure is a listing fee charged whether or not the item ever sells, a transaction fee on the item plus shipping, and payment processing with its own percentage and fixed component. Individually each looks modest; stacked, the total take on a typical sale lands well above what any single advertised number suggests. This calculator adds them the way your payout actually experiences them.
Two structural details do the damage. The transaction fee applying to shipping means charging for postage does not dodge fees — a habit carried over from platforms where shipping is fee-free. And the fixed components (listing fee, the fixed part of processing) hit small orders hardest: on a $6 sticker sale the flat charges alone are a serious slice before any percentage is applied, which is why low-priced Etsy shops live or die on order bundling.

Questions
Do I pay the listing fee even if nothing sells?
Yes — it is charged when you list and again on renewal, sale or no sale. Shops with hundreds of slow-moving listings quietly pay for that inventory every few months, which is a real cost worth including in your overhead.
Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?
The transaction fee applies to shipping you charge the buyer, and payment processing applies to the whole amount paid. Free-shipping pricing (building postage into the item price) changes the presentation, not the fee math.
What about Offsite Ads?
If an Offsite Ad brings the buyer, Etsy charges an additional percentage on that sale on top of everything here — and above a revenue threshold participation is mandatory. It is the largest single fee in the Etsy system and it is not included in this calculator's base stack.
