Gumroad fee calculator

Gumroad advertises 10% plus 50 cents. Card processing is a separate line on top, which is the part that surprises people selling cheap digital products.

The two fees, stacked

Gumroad's own fee is 10% plus a fixed 50 cents per transaction, and their help page is explicit that this excludes credit card processing, which adds roughly 2.9% plus 30 cents. So a $5 product isn't losing 10% — it's losing both fixed fees plus both percentages, which lands far closer to a quarter of the sale.

That fixed component is why Gumroad rewards higher prices so strongly. The same two fixed charges cost the same on a $5 sale and a $50 sale, so bundling products or selling a single larger package keeps dramatically more per dollar than selling many small items.

One structural alternative: sales that come through Gumroad Discover, their marketplace, are charged a flat 30% that does include all processing. That's more than the direct rate, but it's Gumroad finding the customer rather than you — worth it for discovery, not worth it for buyers you brought yourself.

Questions

Is payment processing really extra?

Yes, and Gumroad states it plainly on their fees page: the 10% + $0.50 does not include credit card processing at 2.9% + $0.30, or PayPal's fees. Both are included in the breakdown above.

What's the deal with Gumroad Discover?

Discover sales carry a flat 30% that includes all processing fees. It's higher than the direct rate because Gumroad brought you the buyer. Direct links from your own audience use the cheaper structure shown here.

Why do cheap products lose so much?

Two fixed fees — 50 cents plus 30 cents — hit a $3 sale as hard as a $300 one. On low-priced digital goods that's often more than both percentages combined, which is the whole argument for bundling.
